Apple Stock Goes Down After President Trump Calls for Tech Giants to Come Home

The United States vs. China trade war is far from coming to an end, and a series of tweets published by President Donald Trump on Friday caused the shares of several American tech giants to decline massively.

Trump required US tech companies to start looking for what he describes as “an alternative to China,” as he wants a bigger part of their manufacturing to happen in local production facilities.

In his tweets, Donald Trump accuses China of stealing intellectual property and explains that American companies can avoid this in the future by moving operations to the United States.

Apple stock going down

The tweets caused the shares of several American tech companies to decline substantially on Friday. As per CNBC, Apple shares fell 4.6%, while Qualcomm and Nvidia declined 4.7% and 5.2%, respectively.

Donald Trump claims he can “order” US companies to move the production to the United States under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), but US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says this option won’t be “exercised presently.”

“He would have the authority to do that under IEEPA if he declared an emergency; he has not done that. I think what he was saying is he's ordering companies to start looking because he wants to make sure, to the extent that we are in an extended trade war, that companies don't have these issues and move out of China,” he was quoted as saying by Telegraph.

Bill Gates: Steve Jobs Was the Only One Who Could Save Apple

Steve Jobs was the only one who could save Apple, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a recent interview, according to Bloomberg.

Gates discussed Jobs’ leadership skills in an interview for CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” explaining that the former Apple CEO, who died of cancer in 2011, succeeded “even when he failed.”

The Microsoft founder points to the NeXT debut as the living proof that Steve Jobs was the right man for the job, emphasizing that despite the 1988 computer “completely failed” and “was such nonsense,” the Apple chief executive “mesmerized those people.”

Gates also praised Steve Jobs for the way he motivated people, despite the fact that the Apple founder occasionally turned into what the Microsoft billionaire describes as an “a**hole.”

“I have yet to meet any person who” could rival Jobs “in terms of picking talent, hyper-motivating that talent, and having a sense of design of, ‘Oh, this is good. This is not good,’” he said as per Bloomberg.

“He brought some incredibly positive things along with that toughness.”

Gates tough with employees too
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who created Apple together with Steve Jobs, previously described his former colleague as “very Trumpish,” pointing out that he often avoided arguing with him just because he wanted to avoid conflicts within the company. He revealed Jobs often said what he described as nasty things about company employees.

Meanwhile, Bill Gates, who is no longer actively involved at Microsoft, continues his charity work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which he founded together with his wife back in 2000.

Gates revealed in the interview that he was also tough with other employees in his early days at Microsoft.

“[We had]a self-selected set of people who were mostly males, I’ll admit, and yes we were pretty tough on each other. And I think sometimes that went too far,” he said.

Apple’s New iPhone Anti-Hacking HAKED

Apple has implemented a new security feature in iOS 12 that would essentially render iPhone cracking tools obsolete as long as they attempt to break into devices using the Lightning port.

This includes GrayKey, a device built by a company called Grayshift, whose clients include primarily governments and law enforcement trying to access data stored on iPhones allegedly used by criminals.

Apple’s new feature works by restricting the functionality of the Lightning port to charging only if the device hasn’t been unlocked within the last hour. This means that at least theoretically, devices like GrayKey should no longer be able to launch brute-force attacks to crack the passcode of iPhones, as the whole process typically takes more than an hour in the case of complex passwords.

But according to a new report, Grayshift has already found a way to bypass Apple’s new security feature, and despite the limitation, its cracking device is still 100 percent effective.

Feature bypass already available
Motherboard cites a forensic expert with knowledge of Grayshift’s development work that the existing implementation of Apple’s iPhone anti-hacking system has already been cracked by GrayKey, so unless the Cupertino-based tech giant comes up with substantial improvements, this won’t be going to change in the final release of iOS 12.

“Grayshift has gone to great lengths to future-proof their technology and stated that they have already defeated this security feature in the beta build. Additionally, the GrayKey has built in future capabilities that will begin to be leveraged as time goes on,” the expert was quoted as saying. “They seem very confident in their staying power for the future right now.”

Apple released a statement earlier this week to highlight its efforts to make USB-based cracking solutions useless, but the company hasn’t said a single thing about more advanced exploits that could be used to break into iPhones despite this new feature.

“We’re constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data. We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don’t design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs,” Apple said.

Grayshift’s customers include police across the United States, government agencies, and other law enforcement departments interested in breaking into iPhones to extract stored data.
